Today is May 17th which just happens to be the 100th anniversary of the fare paying passenger airline industry. On this day in 1911 that first fare paying passenger was taken into the sky in a two person biplane. That is not really a particularly remarkable piece of knowledge though.
What struck me as really interesting was that the first ever stewardesses were introduced by United Airlines in 1930. A whole year before my Dad was born! There were a number of criteria which you had to meet to become a stewardess; be a Nurse, aged under 25 and weighing no more than 115 pounds (or 8 stone 3 pounds). Presumably you had to be female too. None of that would work in todays politically correct world would it?
