Are you ‘aving a zarf?

I learnt a new word today. Want to know what it is? Ok, it’s Zarf. Now I know it sounds like a science fiction movie villain, Zarf Vader anyone? But it is actually the word for a holder for a coffee cup with no handle. It originates from the middle east many years ago and was generally used to describe an ornamental holder for a hot cup. I’m not sure whether you could apply the same word to the cardboard sleeves most coffee shops give you with take away hot drinks though. Can any of you answer that? Check out the definition on the excellent site by clicking here.

So next time I’m in Starbies, Costa or Hartley’s I will ask for my usual BAM (that’s a black Americano) with Zarf!

So it's also quite a high scoring word for Scrabble too 🙂

Fred Flinstone tried to use “ZARF” in scrabble against Barney, but he didn’t know what it was.
