Did you know that in the UK there is a legal requirement for a prison to have a library? I didn’t. But I don’t have a problem with that, what i do have a problem with is that there is no legal requirement to have a library in a school. Without a legal requirement for a school to have a library I fear that this would be an easy target for the government’s programme of cuts. You could argue that school children can just go to their local library and prisoners can’t. However many public libraries are also being closed as part of the current slash and burn policies of Clegg and Cameron. In my opinion children should be encouraged to read at every opportunity and what better opportunity than at school? I have always loved books and I have always been a regular user of my local library. I also used the school library all those years ago when I was a school kid! I would love to hear your views on this.
