How much do you love popping the bubbles on a sheet of bubblewrap? Is there anyone out there who doesn’t like it? I certainly can’t find reference to a bubblewrap related phobia online. But enough of that, this wonderful material was invented in 1957 by Alfred Fielding and Marc Chavannes. But if you thought that they had set out to invent a packaging material you’d be wrong.
The pair had tried to develop a three-dimensional plastic wallpaper. This was a failure but they did then see the potential for the material they had created and voilà there you have bubblewrap. The brand name is owned by the Sealed Air Coporation, a company set up by Alfred Fielding in 1960. As for its use as a wallpaper I suppose it might have made it easier to make your own padded cell in any room of your house.
