Apparently I would have starved had I been a Roman Legionnaire. Largely because they used to be given liquorice sticks to chew while they marched to help stave off hunger and thirst. I really, really can’t stand liquorice. Is Liquorice a Marmite thing where you either love it or hate it?
Also how does chewing liquorice stop your thirst? I think I get the hunger point to a degree, but not the thirst. Can anyone explain that in non-scientific terms to science plebs (copyright – Andrew Mitchell) like me?
